MAGNUSON, WARREN G. (b. 12 April 1905; d. 20 May 1989)

Democratic president pro tempore of the Senate, 1979–1981. Washington sent Magnuson to the House of Representatives in 1937. In 1944, he moved over to the Senate, where he served six terms. When Senator James O. Eastland of Mississippi did not seek reelection in 1978, Magnuson became the senior member of the Democratic Party, which controlled the chamber. As such, he was named president pro tempore at the outset of the 96th Congress. He lost his bid for reelection in 1980, contributing to the Democrats’ first loss of majority status in the Senate since 1954. J. Strom Thurmond replaced him as president pro tempore.
